iFood is a Brazilian company that operates as an intermediary between restaurants and local shops and customers purchasing their items. By enabling sellers to join their marketplace and utilizing their own delivery methods, or by enabling sellers to join by using iFood’s resources to have goods shipped for them, vendors can easily and efficiently render products to their customers. Similarly to UberEats, Door dash, Skip The Dishes, or various other food delivery apps found in North America, iFood employs gig workers to fulfil the needs of these consumers. One of the advantages of working for iFood however includes various insurance, injury protection, and perks that allow a driver to complete their work knowing they are protected and can live peacefully knowing that support is available in the event of an emergency or an injury. I believe all applications, including those in Canada should include such additional protections considering the current lack of security and peace of mind workers have when using these apps there.
GE Healthcare was also another organization that we visited today. They are responsible for producing, maintaining, repairing, and refurbishing medical devices used in the healthcare field. After seeing their operations in Brazil, it is visibly clear that this work takes an enormous amount of effort, time, precision, and attention to detail as they must thoroughly clean and decontaminate devices on receipt, test and investigate devices to ensure functionality, repair devices as necessary, and pack and ship or store the devices for later shipment. Did I mention these can cost millions of dollars!? Their work is incredibly impressive and essential especially since these products enable our healthcare workers to do their work in saving lives.
