Today we had the opportunity to learn about how business comes into play to help support healthcare. We had a chance to receive a presentation from the Head Manager and a few Doctors of the hospital, and then have a tour around the hospital.
The presentation helped highlight some stats on how well Brazil is doing in some areas and areas they still have room for improvement, just like Canada. Brazil has a private/public health system; the hospital we were at was public. Canada and Brazil share similar struggles such as having long waiting times and difficulty getting necessary funding, although after some conversation with one of the doctors it sounds like Canada is worse. I couldn’t help but wonder how a private form of healthcare in Canada would fair. This is a controversial subject in Canada and has been talked about for a long time; there are pros and cons of a mixed system. Private care would naturally be more expensive and unavailable for many of lower income, however it could take some strain off of the public system. How many doctors and nurses would move into the private sector though, which usually pays better. It is all very interesting to think about and the trip to the hospital provided me with a lot of of additional information to consider about business in the healthcare sector.
After we went to the park, got a great tour by our friend Nelson’s sister, and enjoyed dinner later on.
